A Colourful Lettering Utopia | Jason Naylor

Jason Naylor is an award-winning artist, designer, and creative director based in Brooklyn. After earning a BFA in graphic design from Brigham Young University, he moved to NYC to immerse himself into the life, colour and magic of New York. Jason’s work is characterised by bright colours and rich blacks, and regularly contains messages of love and positivity, as he believes that kindness is the key to success. Working across both digital and traditional media, Jason’s work ranges from typography and illustration to products and large scale murals.

With a mission to spread colour and positivity across the globe, Jason breathes life into every project with an optimistic attitude, humility and confidence. His brightly coloured designs and positive words reflect his zeal for life, his quest for joy and his love of LOVE. “I like to live by the ‘fill the well’ philosophy, which is basically just constantly logging visuals, snippets, and bits of info in my brain” explains the artist. This attitude is reflected in his recent art installation titled WILL WORK FOR LOVE where Jason used neon and flashing lights and construction themed colours including fluorescent yellow and orange. The inspiration for this came from walking past a construction site; “I noticed how beautiful the neon yellow cones were that were blocking the sidewalk. It stuck in my mind as I began designing my installation”.

Most of Jason’s work begins with sketches on an iPad using Procreate. When necessary he imports some fonts and typeset letters, however, the script letters he uses are always hand-drawn. “I like the combination of the two because it merges the rigid, computer made style with an organic, hand-made element that feels right to me” describes Jason.

Jason’s career highlights include creating typography for a harbour cruise boat, a hot-air balloon, a smartwatch face, and buildings. Yet, his proudest project to date is an 8 story digital billboard in Times Square which features his lettering animation flying across it. Other notable works include LOVE DRAGON; a 60 ft mural he created for the POW!WOW! mural festival in Worcester Massachusetts which lives permanently on the side of the Community Center in the town. “I revised that piece down to every perfect detail before painting it and took a week to make sure the paint job was as special as the sketch” states the typographer.

Currently, Jason is working towards developing a three-dimensional version of one of his favourite motifs; the heart, and at the end of 2020 he will be releasing LIVE LIFE COLORFULLY; an illustrated book of words of wisdom portraying his thoughts and ideas on creativity and joy. His work has received global recognition including the Golden Novum Design Award and two CLIO Bronze medals. It has been featured in numerous publications and blogs and he has been featured on HGTV and the Discovery Channel. In 2018, Jason was named by BUMBLE as one of the 100 Most Inspiring New Yorkers, and his upbeat, colourful creations have found partnership with a range of brands such as Coach, Pepsi, Guess, XBOX and Maybelline.
