New to Type Department are a selection of typefaces by Porto based, independent digital type foundry, Nova. Founded by Joana Correia, collaboration is key to their values as a foundry, and they aim to bring new and original designs by fresh and upcoming type designers to life. Created with care and attention to detail, we are excited to present Laca, Lemongrass, Epura and Artigo in our store.

Available in semi-sans and sans serif, Laca is a versatile typeface inspired by retro Portuguese packaging of soaps. Laca brings a familiar feeling of closeness and warmth, yet with a modern aesthetic. It’s a lively typeface that brings texture and personality to the text, making it the perfect fit for branding or communications. The sans serif version, Laca Text, is cleaner and more simple. It works better in smaller text and can be paired perfectly with Laca, or stand out as an independent style.

Designed for display use, Lemongrass is a connected script typeface influenced by brush lettering, the sea and the strong winds that exist in the foundry’s base of Porto. It has low contrast and smooth connections and can be used for branding, packaging or small texts in order to create beautiful content. The typeface has lots of ligatures, swashes and alternative shapes that allow for many unique interpretations.

Created by Louis Bandovas, Epura is a geometric, clean and sans typeface named after Épura, the base structure for descriptive geometry. Architecture and pure lines have inspired the design, and the one-story ‘a’ and ‘g’ give it an informal look. Epura is available in multiple weights, adaptable for a range of uses.

Artigo is a typeface system for text, and is a modern interpretation of the handwritten aspect of the first roman types. Its abilities are in small text with personality, and the italic version captures its dynamic and expressive feeling even more. Also on offer as part of the system is Artigo Display; the odd sister of Artigo text with its own personality. Updated with five new weights, the family is incredibly flexible across a variety of mediums. Artigo Display won a Certificate of Typographic Excellence from the Type Directors Typeface Competition in January 2018.
