Back again for 2019/20, Slanted Publisher’s Yearbook of Type has returned with a practical guide and detailed presentation of an impressive 158 contemporary typefaces. The book helps users navigate the diverse and wide-spanning typographical landscape in order to choose a font that perfectly suits their needs boasting a sturdy, hardback cover and collection of beautiful colours inside.
Standing out as a designer in today’s climate is challenging, as it’s never been easier to design, publish, and share typefaces due to social media platforms and the internet in general. For typeface users, in particular, staying up to date with the latest typography trends and finding the right font has never been easier thanks to publications like this. The Yearbook of Type 2019/20 brings together these innovations in typography through a series of articles showcasing sketches, background knowledge, technical information, instructions, and descriptions.
The graphic system of the book presents each individual typeface through a double-page spread, the left-hand side showcases the type specimen, whilst the right-hand page provides detailed information about the font’s designer and foundry, as well as further information about the typefaces’ characteristics.
Also included in the book is an extensive index of all 176 type designers and the 98 featured type foundries clearly displaying the fonts according to classification, as well as presenting the font designers, publishers, and explanations of OpenType features.
Alongside essays, interviews and tutorials by Pedro Amado, Benjamin Wurster and Bianca Berning, it also includes an exciting feature of an interview with the Founder of the Femme Type (@femmetype) platform Amber Weaver, which celebrates women in the type industry.
You can also directly download and test fonts via The Yearbook of Type’s online microsite which links the typefaces directly to their foundries’ websites.
