Every place has something to say. Some signs whisper, some shout, some welcome us in, while others tell us exactly where to go. Together, they shape how we navigate, understand and experience the world around us.

For Issue #11, we turn our gaze to wayfinding, guest edited by DNCO, the London-based branding and wayfinding consultancy led by Patrick Eley and united by a deep understanding of how places feel and why people care about them. Drawing on DNCO’s experience shaping identities and wayfinding systems for destinations around the world, this issue explores wayfinding as more than a practical problem, examining how typographic signs, systems, materials and maps can transform space into place.

The editorials crafted for this issue explore the many voices of wayfinding and the systems behind them. We look at the cultural character embedded within local signs, the universal symbols that help us navigate unfamiliar environments, and the engineering, architecture, perception and behavioural science that allow these systems to work. Along the way, we explore why we trust arrows, how legibility works, how sound can guide us, how signs withstand the physical world and how Google Maps has changed not only the way we navigate, but the way we see our surroundings.

Through conversations with designers, typographers, architects, engineers and makers, TYPEONE Magazine #11 explores how the signs around us guide us, reassure us and quietly shape our sense of place.

The Value We Bring

With every issue, we dedicate ourselves to the task of providing you with grounded pieces of advice from industry professionals to better your creative career, relatable content from designers at all stages of their career journeys, inspirational stories, and a fresh, unique perspective on the world of graphic design and typography.

DNCO is a studio obsessed with place, how it feels, why people care, and how design can create a sense of belonging. Their work spans branding and wayfinding for some of the world’s most ambitious destinations, from the V&A and London Overground to DUMBO and the state of Vermont.

For Issue #11, DNCO, led by Creative Director Patrick Eley, have brought that thinking to paper, creating a visual entry point into an issue that explores the signs, symbols, systems, and structures that help us find our way.
