After all, it’s one of the many reasons why we love to showcase the masterminds behind them.

As we enter 2025, we’re excited to follow the works of these 15 type designers. From emerging talents to established foundries, these designers have caught our eye with works that demonstrate not only technical excellence but also a deep understanding of typography’s evolving role in graphic design. Through meticulously researched revivals of historical typefaces and innovative new forms, they exemplify the precision, curiosity and creative spirit that makes typeface design such an enthralling field.

1. Pauline Le Pape

Amsterdam-based type designer, art director and designer Pauline Le Pape brings her eye for striking, stylish typography and curiosity/penchant for the unexpected to every project she touches. Standout works include custom-drawn lettering for Nike, evocative of the original wordmark’s sketches, and her self-initiated serif type family Till.

2. Lo-ol

Lo-ol, working between Switzerland and South Korea, blend their European and Korean heritages to create fonts with unique origins, not shying away from quirks and personality. Founders Noheul Lee and Loris Olivier for example describe Kronik Antik as “an audacious transitional serif” that merges Didone tradition and slab-serif lineage.

3. ALT.tf

Boasting a dynamic new website and release of several typefaces, 2024 has been a good year for our women-led sister type foundry, established to dilute the font industry by collaborating with underrepresented groups (formerly known as Femme Type). Fresh font releases include the refined, and striking ALT Maria Clara and the sturdy sans-serif stencil ALT Klarinet. Stay tuned in 2025 for more exciting releases and collaborations.

4. Xiang-Xiang Lee

A type and graphic designer from Taipei, Xiang-Xiang Lee is currently pursuing a master’s degree in Type Design at the École cantonale d’art de Lausanne (ECAL) where she’s bringing her fashion design roots to her type portfolio. Morpheus is an expressive example, inspired by avant-garde fashion designer Hussein Chalayan and his innovative approach to garment design.

5. Edouard Bérard

On our radar is another ECAL graduate, Edouard Bérard, whose expertise spans type design, graphic design, and art direction. His diploma project, Sita, draws from traditional Scotch Roman typefaces — specifically Miller and Richard’s 1822 Double Pica Roman — while incorporating influences from early British grotesques in the sans serif version.

6. Irene Vlachou

Athens-based Irene Vlachou’s practice spans over a decade of significant contributions to Greek type design, ranging from commercial projects with major tech companies to cultural institutions. Her expertise in variable fonts and Greek typography has established her as a sought-after consultant and educator in the field. Her Instagram account — a treasure trove of Hellenic type artefacts — is one not to miss.

7. Anne Seseke

Anne Seseke’s thoughtful and detail-oriented approach to design is clear throughout her portfolio, whereby simple shapes combine with complex conceptual thinking. Her diploma project, ‘Machine Like Man,’ is one such example with a bespoke font family that draws inspiration from early computer printing techniques.

8. Dominik Bissem

While his sketchbook brims with moody, gothic illustrations and abstract monochromatic forms, type designer Dominik Bissem shows his versatility in his typographic practice, notably his diploma project Rivale. A type family that brings together Rivale Serif and Rivale Grotesk, the styles influenced each other organically during development.

9. Due Studio

In the last few years, Due Studio has expanded their creative offering to include typefaces that mirror the non-dogmatic approach of their graphic design practice. With eclectic, experimental geometric delights such as PVF Display, Kovskij Display and Anolo Grotesk sitting alongside the irreverent contemporary neo-grotesk Grotta.

10. Regular Lines Type Foundry

At the helm of Prague-based foundry Regular Lines, Jozef Ondrík and Matej Vojtuš are driven by their commitment to innovation in digital type. Their passion for pushing technological boundaries and embracing cutting-edge techniques has already produced an impressive collection of bold, distinctive retail typefaces.

11. Production Type

With a focus on digital type design, Production Type boasts a vast array of typefaces to meet all your creative needs — from the unconventional and charming geometric grotesque Stratos to Signal Compressed, a high-impact condensed display font inspired by late modernism.

12. Julien Simon

Whether he’s creating gloopy letters with a glue gun, drawing curve-free rocky fonts, or crafting a somewhat mystical, Basque-style display typeface inspired by tombstone engravings found in the northern Euskadi area, the graphic, motion & type creations made by Julien Simon bring a party to any design.

13. Michelangelo Nigra

Each typeface in Nigra’s portfolio, from the whirlwind-like swashes of Rapidissima to the punchy personality of Rapida and the no-nonsense newspaper-friendly workhorse Greta Text, exemplifies his deep understanding of typographic history while pushing creative boundaries.

14. Sascha Bente

Working from his Berlin-based studio, graphic designer Sascha Bente has been crafting delightfully distinctive visual identities since 2012. With a particular penchant for type design, Bente’s work revolves around building custom typefaces and bespoke lettering that bring a unique typographic flair to his projects.

15. Romain Tronchin

Based in Geneva, Swiss graphic and type designer Romain Tronchin explores his passion for football history and culture through distinctive visual design projects.
