Launching Typeland’s Independent Type Design Studio + 3 Exclusive New Fonts

Having worked on freelance and collaborative design projects for ten years, type designers Alessia Mazzarella and Vaibhav Singh have taken the plunge to launch a new website for their independent retail font library, under the banner of Typeland (@typeland). Based in London, Typeland originally established itself as a design studio centring around custom typefaces, multi-script type and branding projects. So, this latest development — which offers exclusive retail fonts through the new Typeland website — looks to be pretty exciting. Through their partnership, the designers explain their aim is to offer ‘exciting new options for multi-script typography, as well as for display fonts’, and to kick off their website launch, they’re also offering three exclusive, newly released fonts.

Typeland’s characteristic approach encompasses a no-nonsense attitude to type design and a ‘wry sense of humour’.  Their practice is infused with the aim to create and distribute fonts for what they’re worth — ‘no hyperbolic claims, no fluffy descriptions, no contrived process stories’. And we believe them… The duo of designers have a vast bank experience and expertise behind them, meaning we can only expect 100% top quality fonts from this new endeavour.

With several years of experience in font engineering, font mastering and quality assurance, Alessia Mazzarella is a type designer whose career has spanned across a plethora of creative type-based facets. She has worked as a senior type designer at Fontsmith and senior font develop at Northern Block, as well as developed original typefaces for URW Asterisk and Google; including multi-script families. Alessia also holds degrees in Typeface Design from the University of Reading, Graphic Design from Central Saint Martins and Graphic & Media Design from Sapienza, University of Rome.

Likewise, Vaibhav Singh is a typographer and typeface designer specialising in multi-script typography with masses of experience behind him. His wide spanning career over the last decade has seen him delve into freelance practices across graphic design, book design and exhibition design in Mumbai, Delhi, Panjim, Reading and London. Having gained an MA and PhD from the University of Reading, Vaibhav focuses on designing typefaces for Indian scripts as well as developing original Latin typefaces and has worked with the likes of Adobe, Google, Monotype, Rosetta, TypeTogether, and URW Asterisk.

With their new website launch, the duo are also introducing three new stunning typefaces available exclusively through Typeland; Amifer, a 10-style sans serif design; Balbum, a rotund one-weight display font; and Zubtrak, a stencil in two extreme styles. The three new fonts, in the duo’s words, ‘demonstrate unapologetic enjoyment and stylistic versatility in the design of letterforms’.

Typeland’s website currently offers font licenses for desktop, web and app use, and designers can also download trial fonts before exploring full licensing options. These new fonts and all future releases will be available to license exclusively from Typeland’s website, so make sure you keep an eye out over there and on their Instagram, too!
