As a brand, we love championing typographic creativity in all its forms; it’s what we’re most passionate about. We’re surrounded, daily, by amazing talents and typefaces, and we’re constantly being inspired by the busy, contemporary type scene. Digital Drops is all about pushing the boundaries of how contemporary typefaces from our font shop Type Department can be used in design, inspired by all the different ways designers, studios and brands are utilising them throughout their work.
How does it work?
We’re interested in how designers are expressing themselves through typography and how it’s shaping the design world. With Digital Drops, you’ll see us collaborating with an array of global artists to produce exciting, limited edition pieces of digital art that utilise contemporary typefaces from our font shop, Type Department, in innovative and expressive ways—championing typographic creativity with every drop.
The digital art realm has a limitless amount of possibilities for creativity. We’re starting small, testing to see what works and what doesn’t with our community, and soon, we’ll be charting a new course into new technologies.
The first edition: DD x prettycoolstrangers.
Our first drop features a limited edition collection of typography-inspired phone wallpapers in collaboration with US-based neurodivergent designer Matt, aka @prettycoolstrangers. Known for their busy typographic compositions, Matt’s work features wavy gradients, wild colours, grainy textures and loads of layering—unique, super engaging and packed full of vibrant 90s–00s vibes.
Matt started sharing work as prettycoolstrangers just over a year ago, founding the platform as a creative outlet during tough times. In an Instagram post dated 4th March, a year on from the beginning and 50k followers strong, they wrote: “I’m blown away ???? I started this account last year as an outlet, a place to post random work I was learning how to make while fighting through severe depression. Finding this ‘thing’ has aided in my own healing, helping me find more of myself, and excited me in a way few things have. It truly isn’t about a number on an app, that’s not a healthy motivator to create. But it is an opportunity to continue to make talented, creative, empathetic friends, inspire and be inspired, teach and be taught. I appreciate that you appreciate what I do ???? thank you.”
We’re so proud of this project and our collaboration with Matt, who, as always, has brought bags of grit and heart to every design. Featuring fonts like Faust by Bouk Ra, Gosna by Quicknap.zzz, Rabbit Hole Display by BOAFF, and many more, this collection takes some of the best fonts from Type Department’s library and puts them into use in prettycoolstranger’s distinctive style. Matt’s wallpaper designs feature mantras to get you through whatever you’re facing—set in bold, energising font pairings that engage and inspire, words read: I do not chase, I attract; shift your focus; I almost forgot, I can make whatever the fuck I want; direction is much more important than speed.
Each ‘drop’ in the Digital Drops world comes with a digital certificate, providing a lifetime 20% discount to our font shop, Type Department.
