MyType’s Merchant Typeface Offers A New Lens On The Shapes Of The Past

Founded by Wayne Fearnley, MyType creates typefaces to lead the way in modern design without dropping the lessons of the past. Having previously released the beautiful yet subtle Metrik, the elegant stencil Céline, and the super bold condensed display Quench Variable, the foundry’s most recent offering is perhaps more paired down, but still wildly impressive.

Merchant is a functional sans serif typeface which is built on the classic shapes of the past, merged with the peculiarities of contemporary design. The four weight sans serif takes its vernacular from 20th century British typefaces, and in particular, the foundations set by Eric Gill, Edward Johnston, and Margaret Calvert.

Merchant’s counters are pushed wide to ensure comfortable readability in both text and display sizes, meaning it’s a super versatile font to use. In text settings, Merchant offers a calm, paced reading experience and looks clean, clear and neutral, while in display settings it brings a sharp, contemporary edge. The typeface also comes with alternate characters for improved flexibility.
