Designed by Warsaw-based type designer Agnieszka Ewa Olszewska (@agnieszka.ewa.olszewska), Zania is a stunning new typeface available on Type Department now.
“Like with most of my letters,” the designer reflects, “I can’t really say where an idea comes from…I drew a letter and it stuck in my head for long enough that I couldn’t resist – I had to make a lettering piece. So I did, and I got some comments on my (back then very small) Instagram profile encouraging me to make a typeface in this style. So that is the story behind the Zania.”
Leaning towards her usual tendency to create experimental displays that play around with shape, the designer focused on creating a strong sense of movement left to right throughout the characters. The serifs are placed in the top left and bottom right of the letters, which adds to this sense of movement, and the unique cuts to the stems mean that each letter takes on an unexpected and contemporary form. Paired with smooth edges, these qualities create a friendly overall feel, while high letter contrasts allow the typeface’s strong personality to shine through.
With an array of playful alternates, Zania is perfect for creating modern logotypes and energetic identities. “The cuts seem to add some speed,” Ewa adds, “so Zania could be a good choice for a logo for a bike or longboards.” Perfect in logotypes, branding, magazine titles, book covers and posters, wherever you’re looking for a bold personality and dynamic sense of movement, Zania is right at home.
